Interior Rail Systems

Ten years ago in Richmond, similar wooden interior balusters were installed in most of the new homes we built. This was one selection where clients rarely hesitated. Installed for safety and required by code, railings primarily faded in the background. Fast forward to today and you will find a different story. Interior stair systems have stepped into the spotlight and have cemented themselves as a featured statement piece in new homes.

Iron balusters have become a very popular choice for interior staircases for many reasons. Not only can they be economical but are low maintenance. Depending on the selection, iron balusters can promote an Old World feel with solid balusters or can provide a more modern contemporary look with geometric shapes.  There are endless options varying from simple and straight to extremely intricate and ornate. Our clients sometimes elect to use the same baluster throughout but often mix and match iron balusters to create their own custom pattern.

Another new trend we are seeing in the Richmond market are stainless steel cable railings. Clean lines and modern appeal make them an excellent choice for those who prefer contemporary-style homes. More often thought of for outdoor use, stainless steel cable is now emerging as a viable option for the interior.  The benefits of using stainless steel cable are durability, sustainability (a greener option!), and of course, aesthetics.

Homeowners are dedicating more time and resources to their desired interior stair systems.  As a result, they are becoming a featured design element in each new home.  Safety will always be a top priority but why not be stunning and safe all at the same time?!
