Arranging Bookshelves With Shannon Tootle

While many of us are spending significant amounts of time in our homes, that doesn’t mean we can’t be productive! While some home projects can feel intimidating, don’t let that stop you! Our Interior Designer, Shannon Tootle, has some helpful ideas on how to arrange your bookshelves to update your living areas. Let’s get started!

Pop of Color

Bookcases usually have at least one thing on them… books! No surprise there. But books can add lovely touches of color. Whether you’re using encyclopedias or novels, many older books either have a bright color of sorts under the jacket or unique designs on the spine or cover. Thrift stores are great sources for all styles of books. You can organize by pops of color or color blocking (all the same colors group together). Kids books, books that you’ve read

Interesting Accessories

A tip that works for all aspects of your home is adding interesting accessories. You can add really anything of varying size and shape, as well as bookends. When choosing some of your accessories, look around your living area and pull in some of your decor colors. Whether it’s your floor/rug color or furniture, pulling those colors in as accent pieces on your bookcases will help create a cohesive theme.

Height

The best advice here? Keep it simple. Using book placement to create depth and levels to your bookcase is an easy task. Utilizing horizontal and vertical placement, as well as symmetry, will go a long way! When making these decisions, it’s always good to take a step back and look at the big picture to make sure you’re not cluttering your shelving.

Lucite Boxes

Lucite boxes are great touches to any display or shelving. These boxes create a ‘floating’ look for whatever is placed around it. This also plays into the height placement for your shelves, adding extra layers and helping the flow of your arrangement.
